The Hot Spot
“The Hottest Place in Town” is this year’s theme for the Indian River County Firefighters’ Fair, a local event that Sebastian natives anxiously await each year. The fair, located at the County Fairgrounds, truly will be the hottest place in town during March 14-22, as people come from all over the county to meet and mingle. Known to feature favorite fair rides, such as “The Ring of Fire” and “The Zipper”, as well as game booths galore, yummy fair fare, outstanding entertainment, a karaoke contest, and a spectacular array of 4-H/ F.F.A livestock events, what more could you ask for?
Well, there is one more thing! Good news for all of those with competitive spirits in their blood. This year the Indian River County Firefighters’ Fair is adding several “competitive exhibits” to its annual assortment of events. Competitive events will include the following categories: baked goods, creative crafts, canning, and photography. Those entering the baked goods category can submit homemade cookies, cakes, pies and breads. Creative crafts participants should submit hand crafts such as jewelry or ceramics, basket weaving, or traditional quilting. Canning entries include the canning of homemade vegetables, jellies, jams, pickles and fruits. Cash prizes and ribbons are granted to winners in all categories.

My kids looked forward to this event every year since they were very young. There was nothing more thrilling than to see their little faces wide-eyed with excitement when the “zipper” took off!! Memories of our visits to the Sebastian area.
