Posted by billero on May 7th, 2008

uspostal.gifOn Saturday, May 10, you can help combat hunger around the world, by participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers worldwide food drive.

All you have to do is place non-perishable food inside your mail box on Saturday, May 10. The letter carriers will pick up the donated food as they deliver mail along their regular route. All food that is collected will be donated to the needy in the Sebastian area.

Lend a hand and place some goodies in your mailbox this Saturday!

Quiet Little Cafe’

Posted by GeneBillero on April 29th, 2008

On a quaint alley way, right off 14th Ave, in downtown Vero Beach is a quiet little Cafe’ that is relaxing, delicious and you would think you were somewhere in Europe. The Melody Inn is the place, I was treated like gold. The owners are the chefs and care about everything that comes out of the kitchen. I tried the “Le Cordon Bleu” - a pork chop tenderloin filled w/ham & cheese and lightly breaded along with “Rooschti” a shredded potato grilled to perfection and fresh beets in a vinaigrette. Ice cream in a 7 chocolate sauce finished off this delightful meal. This is a romantic, clean restaurant that is worth finding. Gene Billero

On March 16th, from noon to 4 p.m. the Environmental Learning Center will hold its 12th annual festival on Wabasso Island, located between Sebastian and Vero Beach. This family-fun event is free to all and features many ecofriendly activities for the kids. The Hot Spot

Posted by billero on March 5th, 2008

fair1.jpg“The Hottest Place in Town” is this year’s theme for the Indian River County Firefighters’ Fair, a local event that Sebastian natives anxiously await each year. The fair, located at the County Fairgrounds, truly will be the hottest place in town during March 14-22, as people come from all over the county to meet and mingle. Known to feature favorite fair rides, such as “The Ring of Fire” and “The Zipper”, as well as game booths galore, yummy fair fare, outstanding entertainment, a karaoke contest, and a spectacular array of 4-H/ F.F.A livestock events, what more could you ask for?

Well, there is one more thing! Good news for all of those with competitive spirits in their blood. This year the Indian River County Firefighters’ Fair is adding several “competitive exhibits” to its annual assortment of events. Competitive events will include the following categories: baked goods, creative crafts, canning, and photography. Those entering the baked goods category can submit homemade cookies, cakes, pies and breads. Creative crafts participants should submit hand crafts such as jewelry or ceramics, basket weaving, or traditional quilting. Canning entries include the canning of homemade vegetables, jellies, jams, pickles and fruits. Cash prizes and ribbons are granted to winners in all categories.

Log on to www.firefightersfair.org for more information on rules and regulations, deadlines and the official entry form. Or call 772/ 562-2974.

See you at the hottest place in town!

Wild for Wildlife

Posted by billero on February 27th, 2008

pelican.jpgThe 15th Annual Pelican Wildlife Festival is right around the corner. Sebastian is anxiously awaiting one of its favorite local events. This year the event is expected to bring together over a thousand people. The Sebastian Wildlife Festival will celebrate, as well as create awareness for the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The festival will kickoff at 7 AM with the “Run Wild for Wildlife” 5K run. The live wildlife shows, live music, arts and crafts, pontoon boat and kayak tours, silent auction, raffles, children’s activities, storytelling and tons of delicious Floridian foods will begin at 9 AM after the 5K race and last until 4 PM. All of this takes place on Saturday, March 8 at the Riverview Park in Sebastian, Florida.

This is one event you will not forget, nor want to miss. Be prepared because there may even be a surprise celebrity guest, as Jack Hanna has been known to perform at this event in years past. For questions call 772/ 564-0540 or 772/ 388-1656 or visit www.pelicanislandfriends.org for more details and applicatons to sign up for the 5K run. See you in Sebastian!
