Sebastian 3rd Grader in Google Finals

Posted by billero on May 15th, 2008

doodlegoogle.jpgA local third-grader at Sebastian Elementary has drawn her way into the ‘Doodle4Google’ finals. The contest, entitled, “What if…”, encouraged students around the United States, grades K-12, to draw a picture and write a short story based around the theme. Thousands of entries were submitted, and only 40 finalists were selected.

Cierra Purvis, 9, from Sebastian Elementary, was one of the lucky finalists. If she wins, she will get $10,000 towards a college scholarship and $25,000 for a technology grant for Sebastian Elementary.

This is such a great honor for Cierra, so let’s get the word out and help her win! You can log onto:

www.google.com/doodle4google

You have until Sunday, May 18th to vote and Cierra’s entry is located in the Region 4 section.

Now, I’d say Sebastian has some talent!

GO CIERRA!!

Jazzy Night in Sebastian

Posted by billero on May 7th, 2008

jazz.jpgOn Thursday Night I attended the Sebastian High School Jazz Concert, which much to my surprise for a local High School Band was incredible. The Sebastian High School Students can really play. If you were there, you would have thought you were listening to a higher level of musicians playing.

The Sebastian High students were led by a group of seniors that will be attending some of our finer schools in Florida, some will be attending on music scholarships and others will be attending these schools in pursuit of their academic interest. It was nice to see these young men and women on there way to a higher education in their career field choices. Each Sebastian Senior was introduced by the Schools Band Director at the end of the show and thanked for their contributions to the Sebastian High School Band during their High School enrollment.

I would recommend to anyone that likes jazz music to attend one of these concerts.

EcoFest = EcoFriendly

Posted by billero on March 5th, 2008

earth.jpgGear up for EcoFest 2008.

On March 16th, from noon to 4 p.m. the Environmental Learning Center will hold its 12th annual festival on Wabasso Island, located between Sebastian and Vero Beach. This family-fun event is free to all and features many ecofriendly activities for the kids. The EcoFest will try to instill a positive message in children about the benefits of going “green” and the importance of conserving energy. Local canoe and pontoon boat trips will be offered and interaction with live animals will surely suit the youngsters.

EcoFest 2008 will prove to be a very educational and exciting event for children and parents alike.
